Under a Phase I SBIR contract (FA8650-05-M-2583) titled “Development of High Temperature Wiring for Engine Bays” UES has teamed up with Astro, a successful aircraft wiring manufacturing company, to design and fabricate high-temperature wiring capable of sustaining the high-temperature environment in gas turbine engines. The Air Force is putting emphasis on condition monitoring of the components in the gas turbine engines. Today, gas turbine engines are being designed to run at sustained high temperature conditions. The limiting factor to the implementation of the control and diagnostic capabilities for engine health (condition) monitoring are not the sensors themselves, but the temperature capability of the associated wiring.
The UES/Astro team has been selected to submit a proposal for a Phase II SBIR program. The UES/Astro team will optimize the high-temperature wiring systems and manufacture them for commercial sales to engine manufacturers. The wirings will also be integrated with various engine sensors and subjected to engine testing by Rolls-Royce North American Technologies, Hamilton Sunstarnd, and Raytheon.
