    This application note is the first of a series in development at UES. White etching regions (WERs) are associated with premature bearing material failures. This application note describes automated serial sectioning to map WER networks in an AISI M50 steel that had been subjected to rolling contact fatigue (RCF) tests. The progression of the WERs through 445 microns of material is imaged and mapped. Such evaluations can provide insights into subsurface initiation and progression of WERs.
