Dayton Firm Teams with Universities, Enterprises in Emerging Area of Biomarkers
UES Inc., a Dayton-based Science and Technology firm and 2015 R&D100 Award Finalist, announced that the US Air Force (AFRL/RQK) selected UES for a $2 million award, over a period of 2 years, to sense key biomarkers and biometrics that can help predict human performance. A dedicated group of UES scientists will lead this effort to identify key biomarkers and biometrics that can help predict human performance. UES will work closely with experts from the University of Arizona, the University of Cincinnati and DCN Diagnostics Inc. The team will analyze samples of blood and sweat from individuals engaged in military-relevant tasks to identify biomarkers and their significance.
UES Biomarkers Team (L-R): Drs. Jorge Chávez, Stephaney Leskinen, Melanie Tomczak, Steve Sangnyon Kim, and Nina Joshi Dr. Jorge Chávez will serve as a lead scientist on this project from the UES side, along with Drs. Stephaney Leskinen, and Steve Sangnyon Kim. “Biomarkers are biochemical reports our bodies are constantly sending out.”, says Dr. Chávez . “Learning how to sense and understand these subtle messages will help us better understand what’s happening in our bodies.” Dr. Melanie Tomczak, Director of the Biological and Nanoscale Technologies Division at UES, says she’s proud of her team’s achievement. “We’re excited to help the AFRL explore ideas in the area of sensors that our Warfighters can wear, which will seamlessly monitor their fatigue and cognitive levels.” UES has worked previously with AFRL on related concepts, developing core competencies in this emerging field.
UES CEO Dr. Nina Joshi attributed the company’s success in part to attracting and retaining high-quality scientists. “Our professionals are able to collaborate seamlessly with government researchers and external experts, actively pursuing technologies to meet the Air Force’s mission and goals.” She adds, “We’re honored to be a partner in this effort and we are committed to the program’s success.”
