Automated Serial Sectioning of Carbon Fiber Composites as Adjunct to NDE

Robo-Met.3D® was used to analyze the porosity, volume percentage of fibers, and fiber orientation of a carbon fiber composite (CFC). Post-processing segmentation was then used to reveal the pore and fiber distribution, with their volume percentages. This “ground truth” result was used to validate nondestructive testing results using Eddy Current, Scanning Acoustic Microscopy (SAM), Thermography, Radiography, Laminography, and Micro-CT techniques. The results were presented in two studies at the 44th Annual Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation (QNDE) Conference in July 2017.
