Defense Manufacturing Conference Resumes December 2021

December 01, 2021

paulhThe Defense Manufacturing Conference (DMC) is scheduled December 13-16, 2021 at the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center, Aurora, Colorado. Paul Hauwiller, UES' subject matter expert in composites manufacturing will Chair a Session, and has assisted the Joint Defense Manufacturing Technology Panel’s (JDMTP) Composites Processing and Fabrication subpanel to set the technical agenda for the composites manufacturing technology presentations and discussions.

DMC is the nation’s annual forum for enhancing and leveraging the efforts of engineers, managers, technology leaders, scientists, and policy makers across the defense manufacturing industrial base. The DMC is the only United States conference focused specifically on the current and future manufacturing needs/requirements for Department of Defense (DOD) systems and subsystem. The audience of the conference is made up of government, industry, and academia, ranging from CEO-and Flag Officer/SES-level to working-level manufacturing-oriented engineers, scientists, business practice/policy makers and technology implementers, system designers, and representatives of the warfighters. Leaders and manufacturing subject matter experts from government, industry, and academia exchange information and perspectives on defense manufacturing policies, strategic direction, best practices, funding opportunities, and the latest manufacturing innovations that will benefit our warfighters.

This year, the conference is scheduled December 13-16, 2021 at the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center, Aurora, Colorado. Conference sessions/topics will focus on manufacturing technology for metals, electronics, composites, advanced manufacturing enterprise, energetics/munitions, bio-manufacturing/biomedical, and manufacturing readiness. With special topics on manufacturing institutes, cyber security, emerging innovative manufacturing sciences, technologies, and policies.

UES’s Paul Hauwiller has had the privilege of participating in this conference in various capacities over the last 32 years, including assisting the Joint Defense Manufacturing Technology Panel’s (JDMTP) Composites Processing and Fabrication subpanel set the technical agenda for the composites manufacturing technology presentations and discussions.

The composites processing and manufacturing technology session presentations describe practical demonstrations of Composites & Plastics Manufacturing and Supporting Technologies which can enable a step change for: system structures at all temperatures (organic matrix, carbon-carbon and ceramic matrix, thermoplastic, and polymeric additive). Areas of interest include: rapid response - agility in composites design/manufacturing in a low volume high mix environment, low cost & attritable structures, automation & robotics, integrated structures, joining, industry 4.0, application of artificial intelligence / machine learning in composites manufacturing, repair technologies and, manufacturing resiliency.

In 2021 Mr. Hauwiller assisted the subpanel to characterize the state of thermoplastic composites manufacturing for DOD applications and will be chairing the Thermoplastic Composites Manufacturing & Repair session being held on Thursday, 16 December 2021, from 8:15am to 9:45am.

UES currently has a dozen scientists and engineers working directly with Air Force ManTech to advance additive manufacturing, robotics and the digital cyberinfrastructure.
