UES, Inc. was recently awarded $11M by the Air Force Research Laboratory Materials and Manufacturing Directorate to operate and maintain the Directorate’s Materials Characterization Facility II (MCF), a micro-analysis facility supporting AFRL’s research mission. The project was awarded on February 27, 2014 and will be completed over a three-year period.
UES, Inc. proposed to perform maintenance, training, operation, and technical guidance on electron and ion optic characterization equipment within the MCF in support of the research mission for AFRL/RX at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. UES will provide on-site personnel and equipment and accessories, which include scanning and transmission electron microscopes, microprobe, and metallographic and soft matter preparation equipment.
Materials are the backbone of all Air Force systems. Whether structures, coatings or electronics intended for ground-, air- or even space-based applications, materials support the current capabilities and enable the performance enhancements of the future. Characterizing these materials (i.e., their microstructure) and the physical properties they provide is critical to materials development and is the mission of the MCF. It is also the mission that the UES staff has competently accomplished on behalf of AFRL for the past 20+ years.
Founded in 1973, UES provides research and development expertise to government and industry customers and develops technologies and research products for transition to military and commercial applications. UES expertise includes materials science, metallurgy, ceramics, processing science, modeling and simulation, surface engineering, materials characterization, biotechnology, sensor development, nanomaterials and power conversion and analysis.
